“100 Startups To Watch 2021” in Latin America’s innovation powerhouse Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This year has it all to hit records in the Brazilian innovation ecosystem. Between January and May alone, startups raised US$3.2 billion in investments, which represents 90% of what was invested through all of 2020. Also in this period, 91 mergers and acquisitions were registered – another proof of the maturing business environment.

The data are from the Inside Venture Capital Report, produced by Distrito Dataminer, the intelligence arm of Distrito open innovation platform. “We are at a moment of great optimism, despite the tragedy of the pandemic,” says Felipe Matos, president of the Brazilian Association of Startups (ABStartups).

It is not difficult to understand why these companies continue their performance, despite the country’s economic instability. “This moment of crisis calls for agility, flexibility, and innovation. And this is the mental model followed by all startups,” says Matos.

The evolution of the scenario was even clearer for participants in the selection process of the 100 Startups to Watch. In its 4th edition, the list includes 100 companies with innovative solutions to meet the demands of an economy in transformation. These are startups with the potential to become leaders, ready to receive the attention of investors, large companies, governments, and accelerators. In total, there were 2,063 registered.

After the technical assessment conducted by EloGroup and Innovc, which measured aspects such as innovation degree, market potential, and maturity, 200 remained in the competition. In the end, a panel of 27 judges, among consultants, investors, and representatives of startup communities, elected the final list. Based on the data collected from the applicants and the 100 selected, a study of the ecosystem and its progress over the past 12 months was also conducted.
