Facebook Tests Facial Recognition to Stop Bot Profiles

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Facebook is testing a method to prevent bots from using the social media platform and it uses a video selfie to prove that users are truly themselves. Facebook guarantees that the video will not be viewed by anyone and that the recording file will be deleted within 30 days of user authentication.

Video selfie verification will only be prompted if Facebook has any indication or doubt as to who is using the profile, whether it is a person or a robot.

This feature was found by researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who is famous for showing internal tests of social media such as Instagram and Facebook. Wong has published this method on her Twitter account, which uses a video selfie showing the user’s face from several angles.

In a note to the US press, Facebook says that the purpose of this type of login is to ensure that a real person is operating the account. The need for movement is there to make it clear that the user has followed the guidelines and is not a photo.

Video selfie verification will only be prompted if Facebook has any indication or doubt as to who is using the profile, whether it is a person or a robot. As with other tests that the researcher has found, there is no information about when this feature will be activated and there is no guarantee that it will be implemented at any time.
