What the Colombia Power Grid Actually Lost

The earthquake struck at about 7:34 in the morning on Monday, August 10. Within minutes, chunks of the national system in the west of the country simply stopped delivering.

The Ministry’s own tally is blunt. More than 1.5 million users went dark, and roughly 1,700 megawatts of demand was disconnected.

XM published a region-by-region table, and the initial numbers are stark. Caldas, Quindío and Risaralda — the coffee belt — lost 82 percent of their demand.

Valle del Cauca lost 70 percent. Cauca and Nariño lost 44 percent between them.

Chocó, the department nearest the epicentre, lost essentially all of it. The first bulletin described the outage there as ‘almost total’ because the operator had lost the communications needed to measure it properly.

Chocó Was the Hardest Case

Even after local distribution networks in Chocó were reported normalised, two substations were still unable to serve their customers. XM named them: El Siete at 115 kilovolts and Quibdó at 115 kilovolts.

Both held back by faults on the regional transmission system. Quibdó is the departmental capital, so that outage was not a rural footnote.

It kept a whole city on an unreliable footing while search and rescue was still under way.

Was Colombia Close to a Nationwide Blackout?

The short answer, based on what has been published, is no. Neither XM nor the Ministry has described the event as a near-collapse of the national system.
