Key Facts

Brazil IPCA The mid-month CPI print on Tuesday will show whether disinflation is fast enough to keep the Selic on its easing path.

Fed decision The FOMC is expected to hold at 3.75 percent on Wednesday; the statement language on the labour market will move the dollar against the real and peso.

Chile rate Banco Central de Chile meets late Tuesday with the prior rate at 4.5 percent, and a hold would signal concern about sticky services inflation.

Mexico GDP Thursday’s second-quarter GDP is seen rebounding to 0.5 percent after a contraction, a number that will steer Banxico cut expectations.

Brazil GDP Friday brings the monthly Brazilian GDP proxy, giving the first hard read on activity as the economy digests tighter financial conditions.

Colombia rate BanRep concludes its meeting on Friday with the rate at 12 percent, reached in a surprise June hike; the decision will test whether fiscal and political pressure keeps rates elevated.

The week turns on whether inflation data from Brazil and growth figures from Mexico and Brazil confirm that Latin America’s largest economies can keep cutting rates while the Federal Reserve stays on hold.

Investors begin the week with a Brazilian consumer-confidence reading on Monday and close it with a Bank of Japan decision and a Colombian rate call on Friday. In between, the Federal Reserve, Banco Central de Chile and a heavy run of Latin American inflation and activity data will set the tone for carry trades and local-currency bonds.

The dollar will take its cue from the FOMC statement on Wednesday and the first estimate of second-quarter US GDP on Thursday. For Latin American assets, the domestic stories matter more: a soft Brazilian IPCA print on Tuesday would reinforce the Selic-cutting narrative, while a strong Mexican GDP rebound on Thursday could narrow the rate differential with the US and support the peso.

Three Themes for the Week

Disinflation in Brazil is the week’s most tradeable theme, with the mid-month IPCA and the wholesale IGP-M both due.

Monetary policy divergence returns to the fore as the Fed stands still while Chile and Colombia decide whether to cut, hold, or signal a turn.

Growth data from Mexico, Brazil and the euro area will test the assumption that Latin America can decouple from a slowing global economy.

The Week, Day by Day

Monday, July 27, 2026

The session opens with a Singapore monetary policy statement before the Latin American morning brings Brazilian consumer confidence and Mexican trade figures. A FGV confidence print above the 88.5 consensus would suggest that domestic demand is holding up better than the central bank’s cautious tone implies, potentially trimming near-term Selic-cut bets.

Brazil dominates the morning with the current account and the IPCA mid-month CPI, the week’s most important inflation release. A print below the 0.4 percent consensus would be read as a green light for the Copom to extend its easing cycle, while a surprise to the upside would hit local bonds and the real.

Late in the day, Chile’s central bank is expected to hold at 4.5 percent; any hint in the statement that cuts could resume before year-end would lift IPSA equities and the peso.

The Federal Reserve decision at 6.00 pm UTC is the global anchor. With the fed funds rate seen unchanged at 3.75 percent, the market will scour the statement for any shift in the assessment of the labour market or the neutral rate.

Earlier, Australian inflation sets the tone for Asia-Pacific rates, and Uruguay’s unemployment rate lands in the afternoon, offering a read on the labour market behind the central bank’s cautious stance.

Thursday, July 30, 2026

A torrent of European GDP and inflation data lands in the morning, but the Latin American focus is squarely on Mexican GDP and Brazilian unemployment and wholesale inflation. A Mexican growth rebound to 0.5 percent quarter-on-quarter would validate the peso’s recent strength; a miss would raise questions about the economy’s ability to absorb still-high rates.

Brazil’s IGP-M is expected to stay in deflationary territory, reinforcing the disinflation story, while the jobless rate is seen edging down to 5.4 percent.

The week closes with a Bank of Japan decision, a Chinese composite PMI, and a dense Latin American calendar. Brazil releases its monthly GDP proxy, the nominal budget balance, and producer prices, giving a comprehensive snapshot of activity and fiscal health.

Chile reports unemployment, retail sales and industrial production, while Colombia’s central bank decides on rates and publishes the jobless rate. A Colombian hold at 12 percent would be the base case, but any dissent in favour of a cut would move the peso and local bonds.

The Week in Context

Latin American markets enter the week with carry trades well supported by high local rates and a dollar that has struggled to sustain rallies. Brazilian and Mexican assets have been the primary beneficiaries, but the flow has also reached Andean currencies as global investors search for yield in a world where the Fed appears stuck in a holding pattern.

The risk to this benign setup is a hawkish surprise from the FOMC or a growth shock from China that hits commodity prices. Oil remains in a comfortable range for the region’s producers, but any escalation in Middle East tensions would lift fuel costs for importers and complicate the inflation outlook for central banks in Chile and Colombia.

The Bottom Line

The week’s trades hinge on Brazilian inflation and Mexican growth. A soft IPCA print and a firm Mexican GDP rebound would keep the carry trade alive and favour the real and the peso.

The Fed is unlikely to move, but any shift in its statement that suggests a higher-for-longer stance would hit local-currency bonds hardeSt Chile and Colombia offer event risk late in the week; both central banks are expected to hold, making the tone of their communications the real market mover.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the single most important data point for Latin American markets this week?

Brazil’s IPCA mid-month CPI on Tuesday. A print below the 0.4 percent consensus would strengthen the case for further Selic cuts and support the real and local bonds.

Will the Federal Reserve move rates this week?

No. The consensus expects the fed funds rate to stay at 3.75 percent. The market will trade the statement, particularly any change in the description of the labour market or inflation risks.

Which central bank decisions outside the US matter most?

Chile on Tuesday and Colombia on Friday. Both are expected to hold, but any signal that cuts are approaching would move the peso and local rates in each country.
