Today’s Focus

A surge in silver prices overnight — up more than three and a half percent by the close — sets a unique backdrop for a region that counts major miners of the white metal among its listed firms. That rippled through London and early Asian trade, giving regional materials stocks a reason to push higher at the open even as US equity futures were little moved.

Brazilian assets face their own litmus test this morning. The July IPCA consumer inflation index is out this morning, the first official price reading since the Copom policy committee cut the Selic, Brazil’s benchmark interest rate, to 14.00 percent last week. Consensus expects monthly inflation to slow sharply from the previous 0.16 percent.

The real closed weaker at 5.11 per dollar, and any surprise above consensus in the inflation number could quickly dent the currency. Alongside the IPCA, traders will also scrutinise the Copom meeting minutes — out simultaneously — for clues on whether the quarter-point cut was an easy choice or a split decision.

Against that cautious Brazil focus, the broader region draws strength from Argentina’s Merval, the Buenos Aires stock index, which gained more than one percent in the prior session, and from Colombia’s COLCAP, which rose almost as much. Mexico’s IPC, the country’s main index, was the laggard, handing back nearly three quarters of a percent as investors weighed industrial production data due today.

What matters today. The IPCA inflation print at 12:00 local time will either validate the Copom’s easing path or immediately call it into question, driving the real and the whole Brazilian yield curve into the afternoon.

01 The overnight tape in one read

Ibovespa (B3) daily candlestick chart

Silver stole the overnight tape with a powerful rally, settling at nearly sixty-six dollars an ounce — a gain of more than three and a half percent on the session. The move was the sharpest in the metals complex, easily outpacing gold, which drifted fractionally lower in a sign that the bid was industrial and not merely a safe-haven play.

US equity indices drifted lower in a quiet Monday session, with the Nasdaq slipping the most as technology stocks continued their slow bleed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the broader S&P 500 both recorded only fractional declines, leaving futures flat in early Asian trade.

The bond market offered a mixed signal. The yield on the US 10-year Treasury note ticked higher, and the US dollar index — the DXY, which measures the greenback against a basket of major peers — edged above 99.7. That modest dollar strength was a mildly negative call for emerging-market currencies heading into Tuesday’s Latin American open.

In Asian hours, the tone was subdued but not defensive, with investors waiting for a fresh catalyst. The economic calendar remains thin until the US consumer price index arrives on Wednesday, which leaves the morning’s local data releases — especially Brazil’s inflation print and Mexico’s industrial production — in charge of the regional mood.

Assessment — Data-dependent, with an inflation skew MEDIUM

The evidence points to a session spinning on two axes: the overnight commodity pop in silver and the domestic politics of Brazilian inflation. Silver’s move is unambiguous and should lift a handful of heavyweights — mostly via BDRs or the few local plays. But the macro weight sits squarely with the IPCA. Futures markets are already pricing a steep disinflation for the mid-month reading, so the risk is asymmetric: a soft number cements the rate-cut narrative and could let the real breathe, while a sticky print — especially in services — would hit the currency and hammer local rates. Watch the service-sector sub-index within the IPCA release; it is the piece Copom members flagged as their own variable to track.

02 The board before the open

Instrument Level Change Read
Silver (XAG) $65.82 +3.70% Overnight surge powers miners
Ibovespa 172,180 -0.19% Fifth straight decline
IPC (Mexico) 66,439 -0.75% Region’s weakest equity link
Merval (Argentina) 3,122,064 +1.14% Streaks ahead of the pack
COLCAP (Colombia) 2,372 +0.94% Rally continues
USD/BRL 5.11 +0.56% Real under gentle pressure
DXY 99.748 +0.21% Dollar edges up overnight

The table below captures the closing levels of the main Latin American equity gauges and key currency and commodity references. The most striking number is silver’s jump, which offers a clear thematic trade for the opening hour, but the equity board itself shows a region that pulled in different directions on Monday.

Argentina’s Merval was the unambiguous winner, rising more than one percent, while Colombia’s COLCAP also notched a gain close to a full percentage point. The Mexican IPC lagged, dropping by nearly three quarters of a percent, a move that may reflect pre-positioning before the release of the country’s industrial production report this morning.

Brazil’s Ibovespa slipped for a fifth straight session, matching a broadly soft Wall Street. The real weakened alongside the Chilean peso, both losing about half a percent against the dollar, while the Colombian peso bucked the trend with a tiny gain.

03 What the data shows — São Paulo’s stock exchange turns defensive

Stock Move Turnover Note
PRIO3 +6.6% R$600m Oil junior leads B3 gainers
CVCB3 -6.6% R$17m Travel firm hit hardest
PETR4 +3.3% R$3,159m Highest turnover on the exchange
CSAN3 -6.0% R$185m Conglomerate slide continues

The B3 scan reveals a market in rotation, with money chasing value in beaten-down energy names while abandoning consumer-facing and cyclical stocks. Petrobras dominated turnover in both its preferred and common share classes, the two most-traded names on the exchange, rallying more than three percent in a single session.

The biggest gainer of the day was oil junior PRIO, which surged more than six and a half percent on robust turnover, a clear sign that institutional investors were bidding up independent producers alongside the state giant. Embraer, the aircraft manufacturer, also drew serious volume with a two percent-plus gain.

On the losing end, the pain was concentrated in travel, retail and logistics. CVC, a tour operator, sank more than six and a half percent, while Cosan, a sugar-to-energy conglomerate, and Ecorodovias, a toll-road operator, both fell around six percent. Education stocks Yduqs and Ânima were also heavily sold.

The overall picture is one of a market rotating out of domestic demand bets and into exporters and commodity plays — a classic reflation trade as traders position for a slower dollar if the US Federal Reserve turns later in the year.

04 Brazil and the currencies

The real closed at 5.11 per dollar, weakening by about half a percent, which placed it among the session’s smaller losers in the region’s currency basket. Most of the move reflected the broad dollar bid, though traders also note the weight of a local market that has now fallen for five sessions in a row, sapping some of the carry-trade appeal that had supported the currency earlier in the year.

The Copom minutes, due alongside the IPCA, are the prop traders will lean on most. The Selic currently sits at 14.00 percent after last week’s quarter-point cut, and the minutes will show whether the committee is leaning toward another cut in September or prefers a protracted pause. Any hawkish surprise — a split vote, for instance — would offer the real a bid.

Across the region, the Mexican peso was virtually flat, barely moving against the dollar and showing no strong conviction ahead of the industrial production print. The Chilean peso, by contrast, slipped by half a percent, and the central bank minutes out later today are expected to reinforce the gradual easing message that has kept the peso range-bound.

Argentina’s official peso rate was also stable, while the Colombian peso managed a fractional gain, a rare bright spot in a session where most Latin American spot rates lost ground. The differentiated moves underscore a market increasingly pricing each country on its own inflation and rate path rather than trading the region as a block.

05 The regional setup

Index Country Change
Merval Argentina +1.14%
COLCAP Colombia +0.94%
IPSA Chile +0.11%
Ibovespa Brazil -0.19%
IPC Mexico -0.75%

Latin American exchanges open on a mixed footing, with silver’s rally offering a clear leadership group — materials and mining — while soft US futures and a steady dollar keep the mood cautious. The divergence in Monday’s session is stark: Argentine and Colombian equities ran up, while Mexico and Brazil sagged.

Mexico’s IPC index lost nearly three quarters of a percent, the heaviest decline of the major Latin American boards, and it now sits more than seven percent below its 52-week high. The industrial production data due this morning is expected to show some recovery from the prior month’s contraction, and a miss on that number could deepen the slide.

Chile’s IPSA index managed a very small gain, barely above flat, but the market’s attention is on the monetary policy minutes. The central bank’s thinking on the pace of rate cuts — given inflation has been stickier in services — will determine whether the index can stay in positive territory.

The broadest read is one of a region in wait-and-see mode, with each equity market driven less by the global tape and more by its own Tuesday morning data point. That makes the 12:00 hour of Brasília time the pivot of the whole session: Brazilian inflation, Mexican industrial output and Copom minutes all landing within the same window.

06 The technical picture

The Ibovespa’s five-session losing streak has pushed the index deeper into a correction that now stands at more than thirteen percent below its 52-week high. The chart pattern is not yet oversold on long-term measures, but the gradual drift lower — rather than a sharp capitulation — suggests a slow rotation out of Brazilian risk rather than a panic.

Silver’s breakout above a technical resistance level in the mid-sixties is the most compelling signal on the commodity board. If the move holds into the US session, it would confirm a strong bid for the white metal that has been building for weeks, and that support would directly feed into the share prices of Latin America’s precious-metal miners and their BDR proxies in São Paulo.

07 What to watch

  • Brazil’s July IPCA: The first inflation reading since the Copom rate decision: a print below 0.10 percent month-on-month would be warmly received; anything near 0.20 percent puts the easing cycle in doubt.
  • Copom minutes: The tone and any dissent will steer real trading. A unanimous vote signals another cut ahead; a split suggests a pause at the next meeting.
  • Mexico industrial production: A recovery from the prior month’s contraction is expected. A miss could make the IPC the region’s underperformer for a second straight day.
  • Chile’s monetary policy minutes: Traders will parse every word for the pace of future rate cuts, with the peso particularly sensitive to any mention of faster-than-expected easing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is silver moving so sharply while gold is flat?

Silver has a dual identity — both a precious metal and an industrial input. Monday’s rally was driven by industrial demand expectations, likely tied to solar panel manufacturing and a brighter global factory outlook, which leaves gold behind.

What does the Copom minutes release mean for the real?

The minutes reveal the debate inside the central bank. If the vote was unanimous and the tone points to another cut soon, the real may weaken on the narrower rate advantage. Any hawkish dissent would support the currency.

Why did Argentina’s Merval stand out?

The Merval often marches to its own beat, driven by local liquidity and inflation hedges. A daily move of just over one percent is not unusual for that volatile index, but in a quiet regional session, it stood out sharply.

What is an IPCA and why does it matter?

IPCA is Brazil’s broad consumer price index, the inflation gauge the central bank targets. The mid-month version is a preview that moves markets because it shows whether the official 3.0 percent target — plus or minus 1.5 percentage points — is within reach.
