Latin American markets — Updated 1 time · Latest: 29 September 2026

Today’s Focus

Latin American markets open Tuesday under pressure from a firmer dollar and higher US yields. On Monday the dollar index rose 0.22% and the US 10-year Treasury yield climbed about 8 basis points to 5.244%. Gold fell 3.71% and silver 5.41% from Friday’s close.

Regional currencies all lost ground. The dollar rose 1.74% against the Mexican peso, to 17.99, and 1.74% against the Chilean peso, to 968.37. In Colombia, the peso weakened about 1.5% to 3,362 per US dollar at the local close. Monday’s data did not drive the moves: Mexico posted a trade surplus and Brazil’s foreign direct investment beat forecasts, yet both currencies fell with the dollar’s advance.

Brazil’s data is the main domestic catalyst today. IGP-M inflation is out at 08:00 BRT and unemployment at 09:00. The Treasury’s August central government result follows at 15:30, with a forecast deficit of R$14.2 billion (about US$2.7 billion). The real ended Monday at 5.2255 per US dollar, with the dollar up 0.86%.

Colombia’s central bank meets on Wednesday, 30 September, and is expected to hold its policy rate at 12%. Chile’s IPSA fell 1.06% on Monday and Argentina’s Merval 3.28%, while the Argentine peso was steady at 1,525 per US dollar.

The mood is cautious, not panicked. S&P 500 futures were slightly lower early on Tuesday, and Brent crude futures were higher.

What matters today. The dollar and US yields set the tone, while Brazil’s inflation, jobs and fiscal data decide how hard the real is tested.

Monday’s data, one by one

Monday’s pre-open and the weekly preview flagged Brazil’s Focus survey and external accounts, Mexico’s trade balance, Hurricane Polo, oil and the US calendar. Here is what happened.

Brazil — Focus survey. Economists raised their 2026 IPCA inflation forecast to 4.99% from 4.92%, a second weekly rise, and kept the year-end Selic call at 13.50%. Monday’s pre-open had warned that such a revision would hit the real; it closed weaker at 5.2255 per US dollar, though regional peers fell too.

Brazil — external accounts (August). The current-account deficit narrowed to US$5.05 billion from a revised US$9.37 billion in July, against about US$4.9 billion expected. Foreign direct investment of US$7.40 billion beat the roughly US$6.9 billion expected and fully funded the gap. Supportive, but no match for the stronger dollar.

Mexico — trade balance (August). INEGI reported a US$605 million surplus after a US$848 million deficit in July. Exports jumped 40.4% from a year earlier. Calendar forecasts ranged from a small deficit to a US$1.4 billion surplus. The peso still lost 1.74%, its sharpest fall in the region.

Mexico — Hurricane Polo. Polo, a Category 3 hurricane, was about to make landfall on the coast of Baja California Sur on Monday evening, heading for Sonora on Tuesday, according to the US National Hurricane Center. Several ports closed to small craft; there was no clear market effect.

China and the US. China’s industrial profits rose 15.7% year on year in January–August, below the 18% forecast and down from 17.6%; August alone grew 4.2%. Chile’s IPSA fell 1.06%. In the US, the Dallas Fed manufacturing index came in at 9.8 against a forecast of 1.0, which fitted the rise in Treasury yields. Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Bowman spoke on bank supervision and gave no rate signal, and Richmond Fed President Barkin published no text. Governor Lisa Cook carried the policy message: after September’s quarter-point hike, she said inflation, an estimated 3.8% in the year to August, has been too high for too long.

Oil. Brent rose to about US$105 a barrel as US–Iran talks stalled. Chile, Colombia and Argentina had no major releases on Monday. US consumer confidence, flagged for Tuesday, is due today.
