The Continent’s Mood Today

The region wakes to the best terms of trade in years. Copper is at a record, Brent is above US$98 and iron ore is back over US$100.

The catch is the price of money. Markets now put roughly 60% odds on a United States rate rise on September 16, and the European Central Bank is expected to lift rates on Thursday.

That combination flatters exporters and punishes borrowers. Every government in the region is on both sides of it.

Brazil – Back to Work, With an Election in the Room

B3 reopens on Tuesday after Independence Day, with the Ibovespa last at 185,147.15 points and its best week since January behind it.

The political race is now the dominant domestic risk. Datafolha put the runoff at 46% for Lula and 44% for Flavio Bolsonaro, Quaest had it level at 41%, and PoderData had Flavio a point ahead.

All three readings sit inside the margin of error. On Sunday, Lula took the institutional route at the Brasilia ceremony while Flavio Bolsonaro rallied on Avenida Paulista.

For a foreigner holding Brazilian assets, the signal is a strong macro base with an unresolved political question. Unemployment is at a record low of 5.3% and the Selic is easing, but October is a coin toss.

The session read
The Ibovespa eased 0.02%, with breadth evenly split — 2 of 4 names higher. MERVAL led, while IPSA lagged.

Mexico – An Index Decision Does the Damage

Grupo Televisa fell 12.70% on Monday to 7.77 pesos. Index providers had said on Friday that it leaves the benchmark on September 21, replaced by the petrochemical group Alpek.

That single name explains most of the market’s 0.21% decline. Strip it out and the session was close to flat.

The government delivers its 2027 economic package to Congress on Tuesday. It is the first hard read on next year’s spending and revenue assumptions.

For anyone with peso exposure, the currency is the thing to watch. It eased to about 16.92 per dollar, still comfortably below the 17 line that has held all year.

Colombia – A Record, Then a Reminder

The COLCAP closed at an all-time high of 2,565.37 on Monday, up 0.82%, led by Grupo Sura preferred shares up 5.07%.

Then the statistics agency published August inflation at six in the evening. Prices rose 6.24% over the year, up from 6.03% in July and worse than forecast.

The rally therefore happened before the number, not because of it. The central bank rate is 12.00% and the next decision is on September 30.

For residents, the pinch is domestic. Housing and utilities alone contributed 1.78 percentage points, and restaurants and hotels are up 9.36% over the year.

Chile – The Metal Is Rich, the Country Is Not

Copper set an all-time high on Monday, with the London cash contract at US$14,540 a tonne. The IPSA closed at 11,451.80, down 1.14 points.

The reason is volume. July copper output was 403,424 tonnes after weather and maintenance, second-quarter growth was minus 0.2%, and July mining production fell 9.3%.

The central bank decides on Tuesday at 17:00, with a hold at 4.50% expected. Growth forecasts for 2026 have been cut from 2.0% in April to 1.3% in August.

For a foreigner in Chile, the disconnect is the point. A record price for the country’s main export has not shown up in employment, which is running at 9.5%.

Argentina – A Holiday Session and a Waiting Game

The Merval fell 0.5% to 3,034,598.82 points in a thin session, with New York and Sao Paulo both shut. IRSA lost 2.3% and Banco Macro 2.1%.

YPF was the exception, adding 0.2% as crude climbed. The wholesale dollar rose 0.2% to 1,511.50 pesos, still about 25% below the top of the official band.

August inflation arrives on Thursday, with expectations near 1.7% for the month. July was 2.1%, and 33.8% over the year.

Even the country risk gauge was silent. JP Morgan did not publish its index because United States markets were closed, so the 490 basis point reading is Friday’s.

Peru – Coca Area Falls for a Third Year

United Nations figures put Peru’s coca cultivation at 84,546 hectares in 2025, down from 89,800 the year before. That is a third consecutive annual decline.

The regional picture is the opposite. Colombia’s area rose 3.2% to about 261,000 hectares, and Bolivia is at roughly 34,000.

Peru is therefore shrinking its share of a growing market. That matters for enforcement funding and for the country’s standing in the regional debate.

For a foreigner in Peru, the trend is genuinely good news. It is also the quietest story in the region this week.

The Shared Mood

Latin America is being paid well and charged more. Record copper, near-record oil and iron ore back above US$100 are lifting every export account in the region.

At the same time three central banks outside the region are tightening at once. The money that funds the mines, the ports and the fields is about to cost more, and no government here controls that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Mexico’s Televisa fall 12.70%?

Index providers said on Friday that Televisa leaves the S&P/BMV IPC on September 21, replaced by Alpek. Funds that track the index must sell before then.

Did Colombia’s record close reflect its inflation data?

No. The COLCAP set its record during trading hours, and August inflation of 6.24% was published at six in the evening, after the close.

Why did Chile not rally on record copper?

Chile is not converting the price into volume. July output was 403,424 tonnes, second-quarter growth was negative and July mining production fell 9.3%.
