Brazilian real is 19% weaker than it should be and will likely remain so – FGV economist

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - The Brazilian real (R$) is undervalued by about 19% when measured against fundamentals. By the end of the year, the currency could show another large negative divergence as fears about fiscal policy revive, says Emerson Marçal, coordinator of the Center for Applied Macroeconomics at the FGV School of Economics in São Paulo (FGV EESP).

Rio de Janeiro state plans to resume tourism safely

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro yesterday, August 3, met with the federal Ministers of Health Marcelo Queiroga, and Tourism Gilson Machado Neto to discuss vaccination against Covid-19 and the resumption of tourism in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Nicaraguan opposition CxL party denounces arrest of its candidate for Vice President

Peruvian markets worried about Castillo government’s flirtation with radical left

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - One week after the inauguration of Peru's new president, socialist Pedro Castillo, doubts persist about a possible radical direction his government may take. This has generated concern in the private sector, according to reports from analysts and banking sector sources.

The most recent report by risk analysis firm Eurasia Group explains that "there are no guarantees that Castillo will distance himself from the more radical arm of his party [Peru Libre] and opt for a more moderate policy agenda," not even with the appointment of Pedro Francke as Finance Minister.

Brazil manufacturing index hits nine-month high – IHS Markit

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Brazil's Consolidated Manufacturing PMI rose from 54.6 in June to 55.2 in July, the strongest expansion rate in nine months, with faster rates of increase in the manufacturing and services sectors, IHS Markit reported.

According to the consultancy, the easing of some local restrictions against Covid-19 stimulated demand for Brazilian products and services in July, strengthening output growth.

New orders received by private sector companies also rose at the fastest pace since October last year. The fastest rise was seen in manufacturing, although growth also accelerated in the services economy.

Amazon.com launches 1-day delivery in 50 cities in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Amazon announced on Wednesday, August 4, that it will offer Prime service subscribers in Brazil the option to have products delivered within one business day. The service is available in more than 50 cities, said a company executive.

The announcement comes amid fierce competition, with rivals such as Mercado Livre, Magazine Luiza, and Americanas all investing heavily to increase delivery speed and win customers.

The initiative already exists for Prime subscribers in markets in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and comes two years after Prime was launched in Brazil.

Brazil’s services output grows at fastest pace in over 8 years in July – IHS survey

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - A strong rebound in new business volumes led Brazil's services output to post its biggest gain since early 2013, with the sector maintaining its growth trajectory in July, according to the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI).

According to data released Wednesday by IHS Markit, the services PMI rose to 54.4 in July from 53.9 in June, marking the second consecutive increase in output and the fastest in eight and a half years. A reading above 50 indicates expansion.
