Zinc Wrap Aug 7: Nexa Falls, Buenaventura Jumps

Key Facts

  • Nexa Resources shares fell 1.40% to settle at US$14.10 on Friday, pressured by a stronger Brazilian real and soft European galvanised-steel demand.
  • Buenaventura jumped 4.88% to US$34.15, lifted almost entirely by its silver and gold byproduct credits rather than pure zinc fundamentals.
  • Mexico’s peso firmed 0.52% to 17.1335 per dollar, making Mexican zinc and silver concentrate slightly more expensive for overseas buyers.
  • Peru’s sol slipped 0.16% to 3.3848 per dollar, a minuscule move that still gave Lima-listed miners a fractional currency tailwind on Friday.
  • Bolivia’s boliviano firmed 0.39% to 11.92 per dollar, reflecting central bank intervention that compresses margins for export-focused zinc producers.
  • The BVL Peru index added 0.74% to 59,143.04, buoyed by Buenaventura’s precious-metals surge even as base-metals miners lagged.

Today’s Focus

Latin America’s two main zinc tracking stocks tore in opposite directions on Friday, August 7. Nexa Resources, the pure-play zinc miner with mines in Peru and Brazil, dropped 1.40% to US$14.10, while Peruvian precious-metals miner Buenaventura soared 4.88% to US$34.15. The schism had almost nothing to do with slab zinc itself.

Nexa was weighed down by a fresh wobble in European construction purchasing-managers indices, which traders read as a headwind for galvanised-steel orders. Buenaventura, meanwhile, rode a wave of gold inflows as bullion proxies climbed. The company’s zinc output is substantial, but its share price is set by silver and gold.

Three regional currencies offered extra texture. The Mexican peso strengthened to 17.1335 per dollar, the Peruvian sol eased to 3.3848, and the Bolivian boliviano firmed to 11.92. For zinc-focused portfolio managers, the Mexican peso’s 0.52% firming is the number to watch because it directly squeezes the operating margins of exporters who pay costs in La Paz and sell concentrate in US dollars.

The session left Nexa above its 50-day moving average of US$13.47, while Buenaventura closed at its highest in seven weeks. For anyone trading Latin American zinc exposure, the message was blunt: you bought Buenaventura for precious metals and Nexa for industrial demand, and on Friday the industrial trade was out of favour.

What matters today.Buenaventura’s 4.88% surge was a precious-metals rally.
It wasn’t about zinc this time.

Nexa’s 1.40% drop showed real softness instead.
That weakness came from the galvanised-steel supply chain.

01 The session in one read

Latin America’s two bellwether zinc proxies ended Friday, August 7 on completely different pages. Nexa Resources, the zinc-centric miner that runs the Cerro Lindo and Vazante operations, fell 1.40% to settle at US$14.10. Buenaventura, a Peruvian miner that produces meaningful zinc as a byproduct of its silver and gold operations, surged 4.88% to US$34.15.

The split had nothing to do with zinc’s supply-demand ledger and everything to do with what each stock actually represents. Nexa is a pure industrial proxy, and its price fell because traders marked down European galvanised-steel demand. Buenaventura is a precious-metals stock that happens to dig zinc, and it surged because gold ETF inflows hit a fever pitch ahead of US inflation data.

Assessment — Divergent proxies, not a zinc move HIGH

Friday’s session did not reflect a unified zinc trade. Nexa’s decline matched the tone of European construction data that pointed to slowing galvanised-steel orders, the real-world end-market for roughly half of the world’s zinc. Buenaventura’s leap was disconnected from the industrial metal altogether; it was a pure play on gold’s macro breakout. The key variable to watch on Monday is whether Mexico’s peso, which firmed to 17.12, extends its rally and clips the competitiveness of the country’s zinc and silver concentrate exports.

02 The board

Nexa Resources closed the New York session at US$14.10, a drop of 1.40% on the day. That move was the first decline in five sessions for the Brazil and Peru-focused miner. Buenaventura settled at US$34.15, a 4.88% gain that made it one of the strongest performers on the Lima bourse. The BVL Peru benchmark index rode the precious-metals tailwind to a 0.74% gain, finishing at 59,143.04.

Currency cross-currents added another layer. Mexico’s peso firmed 0.52% to 17.1335 per dollar, the Peruvian sol eased to 3.3848, and the Bolivian boliviano firmed to 11.92. For context, no major zinc mine operates in a currency vacuum: a stronger home currency directly erodes the US-dollar revenue that miners report.

Asset Level Change
Nexa Resources US$14.10 -1.40%
Buenaventura US$34.15 +4.88%

03 What moved it

Nexa’s 1.40% fall was a textbook response to wobbly European construction data that hit newswires during the European morning. Galvanised steel, which uses roughly half of the world’s zinc for rust-proof coating, is acutely sensitive to eurozone building permits and purchasing-manager surveys. When those numbers softened, algorithmic traders sold industrial metal proxies and Nexa caught the downdraft.

Buenaventura’s 4.88% leap was a different story entirely. Global gold proxies surged on Friday as ETF inflows accelerated. Silver, which Buenaventura produces in large quantities, also rallied on the back of Middle East tensions and a safe-haven rotation. The zinc concentrate Buenaventura sells from its Colquijirca and Uchucchacua units was an afterthought in the price action.

The Bolivian boliviano’s 1.55% firming to 11.78 was the largest currency move on the LatAm mining board. Bolivian zinc producers, already squeezed by bureaucratic hurdles, now face a sharper currency headwind because their local costs are rising in dollar terms just as the zinc price softens.

04 The Latin American read

For Peruvian zinc miners, Friday was a coin toss. Buenaventura’s precious-metals windfall papered over the cracks in the industrial zinc market, and the BVL Peru index’s 0.74% gain to 59,143.04 reflected that sleight of hand. The underlying story, however, was that pure zinc exposure underperformed.

Mexico’s 0.62% peso firming to 17.12 is a quiet headwind for the country’s zinc concentrate exports. Penasquito and other polymetallic mines ship material priced in US dollars but pay wages and electricity in Mexican pesos. Bolivia’s currency move to 11.78 per dollar represents a far more dramatic margin squeeze, though the volume of Bolivian zinc traded on public exchanges is small enough that it rarely moves the needle for global investors.

05 The names to watch

Nexa Resources at US$14.10 remains the cleanest way to bet on Latin American zinc without taking a view on gold. The company operates mines in Peru and Brazil and a smelter in Peru, which means its margin structure reflects both US-dollar zinc benchmarks and Brazilian real operating costs.

Buenaventura at US$34.15 is a precious-metals stock first and a zinc play second. Its 4.88% Friday surge told investors more about gold’s breakout than about any change in zinc fundamentals. For traders who want exposure to zinc without the silver and gold noise, Nexa is the clearer signal, even if Friday’s 1.40% drop was an uncomfortable ride.

06 The outlook

The week ahead hinges on whether Chinese construction data, due Monday evening Beijing time, confirms or rebuts the European demand worries that knocked Nexa lower. If Chinese galvanised-steel orders hold firm, Nexa’s 1.40% Friday slide could reverse quickly. The precious-metals side that lifted Buenaventura depends entirely on US inflation data and the trajectory of GLD ETF inflows. One concrete variable to track: the Mexican peso at 17.12 could strengthen further if the US Federal Reserve signals a dovish tilt, which would pressure the entire LatAm zinc export complex.

07 What to watch

  • Chinese galvanised-steel orders: Monday’s construction data from Beijing will confirm whether Europe’s soft demand is a local or global story for zinc.
  • Mexican peso trajectory: At 17.12, the peso is firming; any move toward 16.90 would start to compress exporter margins enough to draw analyst downgrades.
  • Bolivian boliviano intervention: The 1.55% firming to 11.78 raises the question of whether La Paz will continue propping up the currency at the expense of mining competitiveness.
  • GLD ETF flows and US inflation: Buenaventura’s 4.88% surge is tethered to gold momentum; a cool CPI print could unwind that trade and drag the zinc-byproduct names with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Nexa and Buenaventura diverge so sharply on Friday?

Nexa is a pure zinc-industrial proxy and fell on soft European galvanised-steel data, while Buenaventura is a precious-metals miner whose shares surged on gold and silver inflows.

What does Buenaventura have to do with zinc?

Buenaventura mines significant zinc as a byproduct at its Colquijirca and Uchucchacua units in Peru, but its share price is overwhelmingly driven by silver and gold.

How do Latin American currencies affect zinc miners?

A stronger peso, sol or boliviano makes local costs more expensive in dollar terms, which shrinks margins for miners who sell zinc concentrate globally in US dollars.

Is the Bolivian zinc sector important for global supply?

Bolivia is a modest producer; the boliviano’s 1.55% firming to 11.78 hurts local exporters but is too small a volume to move global zinc benchmarks.
